Software Engineer

Full-Time (Contract), Remote (US)

Driver’s Seat is an early-stage startup building a driver-owned data cooperative for gig economy workers. We’re developing tools to solve important problems alongside the workers who represent a crucial and growing part of our economy, which requires thought and care in what we build and how we build it.

As an engineer on our team, you’ll have the opportunity to join a company and a product from the start, working across every part of the stack to implement end-to-end features that improve daily work for drivers. This role is a full-time contract position (compensated up to $8,300 a month, depending on experience and skills), with the opportunity to convert to employee status and build an equity stake in the cooperative.

What you’ll do

  • Own the codebase and operate at all levels of the stack, from Elixir, Phoenix, and PostgreSQL to Ionic, Angular, and TypeScript.

  • Design, build, and maintain product features that are beautiful, intuitive, and performant and build driver trust through reliable, accurate behavior over time.

  • Prototype ideas quickly, taking creative approaches to test hypotheses about what we should build next.

  • Work closely with the product team to understand the problem space and driver needs.

Who you are

  • You have three to five years of industry experience using modern web technologies, with an emphasis on user-facing feature development.

  • You are proficient in at least one front-end and one back-end framework/language.

  • You have an eye for design and can take a mockup and build it to high fidelity, keeping the driver experience in mind as you develop.

  • You have experience with (or interest in) technical problems like geolocation processing and data visualization.

  • You’re comfortable working independently as an engineer in a few-person startup.

  • You communicate clearly and often, documenting your process and your work as needed in a distributed, asynchronous work setting.

  • You take a thoughtful approach to decision-making, knowing when to move quickly and when to build for the long term.

  • You care deeply about the gig economy space and the overarching mission of the cooperative.
